get more likes with hashtags

You post an epic photo worthy of instagram stardom, yet your sun salutations over Angkor Wat barely peaks 300 likes. What gives?

With the ever changing algorithms on instagram, being ‘seen’ has become increasingly more difficult.  The easiest way to gain traction without paid promotions is through strategic hashtags & tagging.

 The not so easy part is gambling with which #hashtags will work best. The goal is to have a good mix of specific and generic travel hashtags to ensure you reach a broad audience with your photo.  You should always include a few specifically branded hashtags of accounts that are known for reposting.  The best way to keep track of your hashtags is have the list written in your notes section, so you can just copy and paste it into a comment on the photo (not in the info section – don’t want look like-needy!)  The hashtag list on the photo above worked to generate likes, but it fell short of meeting the photos full potential by neglecting to hit any of the account specific tags.  These account specifics are wildly popular, but have less traction than the generics, so your post has longer potential for visibility (and therefore increased opportunity for likes & reposts).

Tag a few of the very specifics. For example, you’re staying at the #Biltmore eating #cronuts or hiking #halfdome or visiting the #leaningtowerofpisa.  Also important to do a quick search for a geo-popular hashtag like, #paristhroughmyeyes
